Amongst all of the different types of audio files, MP4 might be one that you're not as familiar with. MP4 is a file format that is an extension of the MPEG-4 Part 14 file format - otherwise known as MP4. The best thing about MP4 files is that they are a protected file type and incorporate the DRM system (Digital Rights Management). What this means is that in order to play the file, you need to first authorize your computer using Apple iTunes. You can think of it as an extra layer of security for your audio files. Apple requires iTunes to authorize your system to play MP4 files due to its Fairplay system. While this might seem like a hassle, it's actually not too difficult to set up. And once you do, you'll be able to use any number of programs to open your M4P documents - iTunes, Spotify, KMPlayer, VideoLAN VLC Madia Player, QuickTime. The MP4 file is literally an upgrade on the MP3 files that so many used for audio for a long time. Overall, the MP4 file is a bit more powerful and a bit more useful than the MP3 file ever was, but you should note that it is also something that may or may not be around as much in the future. Why? Because there are plenty of people who are using other types of files to transmit audio these days. Lurking behind many of the audio systems of the day you will still find MP4 files that are powering the work that you need to get done with audio. That said, you should keep an eye out for something even more powerful to come along soon.
