The PICT file type also supports various forms of data depending on which version of PICT file format is being used. For instance, PICT 1 only stores eight colors, making it suitable for compact storage; while with Color QuickDraw's introduction of PICT 2, 24-bit RGB or grayscale images as well as some indexed-color or bitmap images with or without alpha channels can be stored up to 24 bits deep; both formats also commonly store data describing how images should appear onscreen (e.g. pixel locations or dimensions).
