MXF, or Material Exchange Format, is a file container format designed by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers to store digital video and audio data and metadata efficiently for transfer between cameras, digital editing systems and broadcast servers. MXF uses subset of Advanced Authoring Format (AAF).
MXF files, similar to other media containers formats, require the appropriate codec in order to play back their media content. They are typically found in professional camcorders and post-production workflows and typically record high resolution videos that may be quite large in size.
MXF format was developed to reduce costs for broadcasters who must create multiple language versions of one program for global distribution, for instance from London, Los Angeles, Singapore and Tokyo. MXF aims to reduce these costs by eliminating separate master tape production as well as centralising storage of all versions within a common file format.
