Sixel was a bitmap graphics format used by DEC terminals and printers that encoded images as string of characters, each representing six pixels high vertically. Each pattern could be read off as a 6-bit number with "on" pixels coded as 1, off ones as 0. Sixel was designed specifically to allow dot matrix printers from DEC to display images without opening their printer heads for this format.
