PCX (Picture eXchange) was initially created by ZSoft Corporation for use with their Paintbrush program for MS-DOS. Microsoft eventually licensed this format for their Paint program on Windows, making the format widely recognized and usable by many programs, including those included with Windows itself and some dome fax scanners and scanning applications.
PCX files contain single images with up to 256 color palettes that can be detected either through header information or 768 bytes from the end. Image data may be Run Length Encoded (RLE), uncompressed or Run Length Encoded with multiple-byte runs encoding any run of pixels between 0 and 63 bytes long in an RLE scheme; pixels over this range may use multiple-byte runs instead.
