A JP2 file extension means that the file is a JPEG 2000 image file. The JPEG 2000 standard was created in 2000 as an improvement on the existing JPEG standard for images. The JP2 standard is a significant technical advance over the older JPEG standard. It allows users to save different parts of an image with different image qualities based on areas of interest. The JP2 standard was created to improve imaging in several specific applications, including remote sensing, HDTV feeds, and medical imaging. Although several patents relate to the development of JP2, the goal of the Joint Photographic Experts Group, which created the JP2 standard, was to ensure that it remained freely available for use. Many common packages can interpret JP2 files, including Adobe Photoshop Elements 12, Apple Safari, and Corel Paintshop Pro X. A JP2 file extension indicates that the file is an image using JPEG 2000 Core Group file.
