Unified Font Object (UFO) is an open file format published by developer Tal Leming and a team of software developers at Ulead. They designed this cross-platform and cross-application file format as a future-proof method for storing digital font data using the .ufo file format readable by humans. UFO developers say their XML-based source file application is independent and readable and editable by humans. They released the original version of UFO in 2004. UFO 3 included upgrades to how they organize design layers within the file system to resolve growing bottlenecks. They introduced the .ufoz file extension for zip-compressed files in this third version as a solution. A decentralized version of UFO-4 is currently in the concept stages of development in the Software Development Lifecycle.
