WAV (Waveform Audio File Format) is an increasingly popular digital audio format used for storing raw audio data without degradation in quality. Often employed for professional editing and recording applications as well as supported by many music players for desktop computers. Unfortunately WAV files tend to remain uncompressed which results in larger file sizes than compressed formats like AIFF. A WAVE file typically consists of two major chunks of data: an fmt chunk and a "data" chunk. The former defines the format for sample data to follow, including its encoding type and bits per second for each channel; additionally, this fmt chunk may contain information regarding frame count or any compression that was applied. The format chunk is followed by audio data stored in PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) format - Windows default audio encoding that most digital audio devices support. Additionally, this fmt chunk may indicate whether any ACM codec available to Windows is being utilized to compress this DATA chunk data. The fmt chunk can also include cue points and playlist chunks that provide additional information about the file that may be useful to music players. A playlist chunk allows sample data to be played out-of-order while cue points provide identification for specific sample values that should be replayed at certain times in the file.
