What is an AU audio file? An AU (Sun Audio) file was originally developed by Sun Microsystems for use with their Sun Operating System and became widely popular as it became widely adopted across platforms and browsers such as SPARC, NeXT computer workstations, early websites, Unix-based platforms and Java systems. At first these files only stored representations of their native systems' u-law logarithmic data but over time this has changed, now supporting multiple audio data encoding formats (see examples below). AU files consist of three sections, including a 24-byte header, variable length description blocks and audio data. Current software programs capable of processing these AU files include Audacity - a cross-platform audio editor. The header section includes various pertinent data, including sample rate, number of channels and length. This data is stored using big-endian format so that most significant bytes come first followed by less significant bytes; otherwise applications may experience playback errors due to out of order bytes.
